i was talking to kerry brooks from dock six last night about
the westminster kiln. she has cut back on her gas consumption
in their wonderful 60 cube car kiln by almost half since she has
learned to fire it. (103 firings now.)
it takes the same 12 hours to fire it, but with exactly half
the gas pressure. experience.....what a concept.
i use sumi ink when i stain pots......it is almost pure carbon, without
the driers or lacquers used in india ink. (kids at school called it
`indiana ink`.....or `indian ink`.....
sharlene has many bottles of various inks in her calligraphy studio,
and never misses any that i snatch when she is not looking.
i always use the cheap/no frills ink......as most of it goes down
the kitchen drain. i also add about 25 percent hot water to
it before slathering.....(god, i love that word, in fact i would love
to slather david hendley with sumi ink......all of him.)
my brother has been working on a `cone cracker`.....he uses
a four inch chisel and a three pound hammer.....line up the
chisel on the pair of cones, and `smack em`.....we only have
a 37 percent loss rate.

Have you tried letting the ink settle in your rinse bucket. I use a similar
process with oxides & find most settle within hours, pour off the top water &
there you have your raw material again. I hate to hear of anything going
down a sink. Minerals, chemicals,, profits... Joy in Tucson
