I had the pleasure of going to Tim Kapral's pit firing workshop in
Tucson last week-end - a lot of information, interesting people, great
food, and beautiful pots. Tim and his partner Sally go all out. In
addition to the pit, he showed us how to get the same effects by firing
in garbage cans or 55 gallon drums. His pots are gorgeous - swirled
with copper pinks, oranges, reds, purples, and black. I can't wait for
my pots to dry so I can try it here at home.

Patty,
Read your post on pit-firing in Tucson. Sounds like you had a great time. I
also read where you said that Tim Kapral showed you how to fire in garbage
cans or 55 gal drums. Could I ask you for the same info? I too would be
interest in pit-firing in small containers. Maybe I can do something like
this with my high school kids. Please write to me. TIA, Richard Ramirez, "The

Richard,

Tim put about 10 inches of sawdust in the bottom of a can that he had drilled
holes in. He then placed the pots in the sawdust, sprinkling copper carb,
ironite, and rock salt around the pots. He added 10 inches or so of cut up
hardwood, then an equal layer of cut up pine. After lighting it he covered the
can about 3/4 of the way - so that there was still a flame - and let it burn dow
overnight. Beautiful results.

Could you give some of us New Englanders who could not attend the workshop
how he got the beautiful colors and any other info you have time to share.
Thanks in advance. Joan
