Thanks to all who steered me to plans for a ball opener for my
colleague! He's happily looking forward to receiving the snail-mail
phootocopy. However, the ball opener is just that--an opener. Anyone
have plans for a device to center a large amount of clay--say 20-30
pounds? Maybe someone markets a device? Thanks for any help you may
provide!

I would think that the basic concept of the "opener" could be modified to
work from the outside of the pot, forcing the clay inward. Perhaps a
template made of heavy plywood shaped to the profile of the centered clay,
mounted to the ball opener, jigger fashion would work. I have never tried it
but with some fiddling it should work.

I'm a bit concerned about this . If your friend does use a centering
device to centre & another to open up the clay , then will he have the
musstle tone & tecknique to trow 20 to 30 lbs. These devices may take
the effort out of makeing a big pot , but he my injure himeself during
the throwing process . It may be better for him to take advanced
throwing lessions to learn how to centre & open out large lumps of clay.

Axner pottery sells both a centering device and a ball opener through their
catalogue. The centering tool is about $75 and the ball opener is about
$110.Their website is www.axner.com and their toll free number is
800-843-7057. Hope this information helps. Best of luck to your friend.
Sincerely,
Rachelle
