I am interested in getting a digital pyrometer to use when I raku. I've
never used one and don't know much about them and am thus looking for advise
on a couple of fronts: 1) Any ideas where I can get it at the best price?;
2) Does anyone have advise about the different brands?; 3) Can the ones
that are marketed to be mounted need to be mounted?
any advise would be greatly appreciated
Thanks,

Lisa,
We use a digital, portable pyrometer. It says Fluke 51 on it and came from
one of the catalogues, expensive, about $200. I love using it. I can tell
when the increase slows or temperature starts to decline when the tank is
getting empty or freezing up as well as knowing exactly, more or less, what
temperature we are firing to. With so many uncontrollable variables in raku,
I like being able to control the temperature.

We have a Fluke 52 (a two-lead digital thermometer) that we've used many
times in our raku kiln. These run around $250 -- I think they're highly
accurate and reliable! The big advantage of digital vs. analog is that,
with a simple digital watch, you can "time" and keep track of the RATE of
heating or cooling in a kiln (something virtually impossible to do with an
analog device).
Fluke also makes a single-lead model (a "51") that costs $50-or-so less than
the two lead model.
Best 'o to ALL !!
