Hi! I just fired my 1st 2 lidded bean pots. Ok..I'm new at this...dinnerware
stuff...& the lids slumped. I thought I probably needed to fire the lids on
the bowls..but worried that they would crush them...I was wrong...right?
I've fired handbuilt plates & they've never slumped...so, am I to fire the
lidded things as one piece???? thanks so much! for the help. You all are
awesome!

Debra,
If you make the lids with a concave they will not slump. A slight one will
do. I always fire my lids on the pots. Unless your firing in wood or salt,
then I wad them on the pots also.[Sometimes] You can also mix some Alumina
Hydrate in some wax for around the lid and seat for a glaze firing. I have
made them 24in. in diameter without a slump. Don't make them to tight or your
pots may crack.

Hi Debra,
I always fire lidded jars together because the jar or lid may warp a bit
if I don't. Just be sure you wipe away any excess glaze that might run
and forever seal your jar shut. A tap or two on the jar after firing
should cause a clean separation of the two after they've cooled a
little. I have some lovely jars that will never open. So they're just to
look at. Good success to you.

Hi Debra
It is better to fire larger lids on their 'partner' pots, you usually get a
better fir that way. Also lids wont slump if they are slightly domed,
does not have to be a high dome, but they are stronger that way, like
arches are strong and hold up well.
Hope this helps.

Debra, it is usually preferable to fire lids on bowls, seated in the way that
they will be used. However, if your lids "slumped" - I'm thinking you may
mean "sagged" - then perhaps they
did not have enough curvature - in which case firing them ON the bowl
would make no difference, they would still sag. If you are making a
FLAT lid, then generally it cannot have an unsupported diameter greater
than four-five inches without sagging in the middle. Larger lids, such as
those
for most bowls and casseroles, must be at least SLIGHTLY bowl-shaped them-
selves, in order to maintain their shape, without sagging, during firing. It
is a matter of engineering the shape of the lid to withstand the stresses
of firing.
The higher the firing temperature, the greater the stresses, usually.

Debra, If you fire the lids on the bowl, the gallery will help keep
the shape. Make sure that your walls are even throughout and that your
knobs on the lids are not too heavy. Make sure that the gallery is open
enough(rim should not be higher than 30 grades) You might experience
trouble to remove the lid after the firing. Normally you can tap on the
side of the bowl and the lid will get loose, but if you still experience
trouble to loosen them, do the following: Mix calcinied aluminia, cmc
and water. Apply to the gallery before firing. Hope this help.
