remedial education for pit firing

I was at meeting last week, discussing our play time
activities with a co-worker, she was very interested in
pottery and had done a little but has absolutely no access
to a wheel or kiln. I suggested that she get some clay and
do a pit / garbage can firing. I've never done it or even
seen it done. Does anyone have instructions or a
description of the method already typed out that I could
forward to her???

thanks

I had used a metal garbage can that had holes drilled into it. It was
then filled with a combination of sawdust and newspaper. The pieces
were placed in the middle and covered with more of the same. The
material was then lit, and the cover placed back on the can. the fire
had a tendency to smoulder out, but I believe it was due to the
moisture content of the saw dust being used (it was a bit on the wet
side). The results were that of a deep black where it smouldered in
the saw dust, with black wisps where it was surrounded by the
newspaper. I was quite pleased with the results. Make sure to notify
your local fire dept. prior to the firing.
