The Middletown Fine Arts Center, Middletown OH(mid-way between Cincinnati &
Dayton), which offers instruction in pottery, jewelry, enameling,
painting/drawing/water color, photography, etc., has an annual sale of work by
'starving student artists' in conjunction with a local festival. The student
sale sort of tags along, since the fine arts center is adjacent to the
festival area. No official publicity, it relies on drop-in sales, or repeat
visits from previous customers. The fine arts center takes a 10%
commission, and each student displaying work must contribute a certain amount
of time to the effort, setting-up, on-site during sale hours, packing up,
etc. The festival certainly provides the customer base. It has been very
successful (a great way to offer tests, 'seconds', pieces you can live
without, etc.), as far as I can tell. I don't know how the center spends its
commission....although the pottery studio did get a new extruder this year
(the pottery is always a big seller...low prices move pieces, but there isn't
any quality control).
