Hi there

Does anybody know about the glaze called Local Reduction Glaze? It is a
glaze that will give reduced effect in an electric kiln! What do I need to
make this glaze? if you know anything about it, please help me.

thank you very much

Your message got clipped, but I'll have a go at it.

Any glaze that includes ingredients that are oxygen-hungry would be a local
reduction glaze. Often the ingredient is silicon carbide. In the kiln the
silicon carbide breaks down. The silicon wants to be SiO2 and the carbon
wants to be CO or CO2 - both steal oxygen from wherever they can get it,
usually the other glaze ingredients, thereby reducing them. So, by using
silicon carbide, you can get copper reds in an electric kiln, for example.

unintentionally - in the raku kiln.

Silicon Carbidde is the reducing agent. Ceramics Monthly talked about it in
this months edition. It is pretty sketchy stuff and make sure to suspend
your glaze well or it sits on the bottom like steel shavings. The finer the
better

I have heard that silicone carbide in a glaze will give a local
reduction effect in an electric kiln. I think I might have a recipe
somewhere, if I can find it I'll let you know. In the meantime, check
out glaze recipes containing silicone carbide and see how you get on.
Cheers.
