reaction to lead bisilicate

Hi anyone interested.
It`s a pitty that my message to Amy Parker did not reach Clayart
yesterday. I wrote that I learned from Tom Buck that Amy is a
functional potter and will not be able to use a lead based glaze in her
pieces.
As most of us potters know, lead oxides are soluble in alkalies and in
some acids. This is dangerous for the human body. For this reason lead
in functional ware is banned in, almost every country, this includes
South Africa. Raku glazes and other non-functional glazes however often
still contain lead. I am sorry that I could not help her with this, but
offered to look up some recipes in my book on glazes written by
Emmanual Cooper.
Unfortunately she,and other Clayarters did not recieve this message.

Sarie Maritz is a wellknown potter from Namibia. She has done a lot
during her career to promote ceramic in all ways. She is not ancient,
although if it was not that we learned from the ancient, we proparbly
would have had a great lack of knowledge, specially in ceramic. No she
is not dead, but very alive with proparbly enough knowledge to lecture
on clayart instead of cry out for help.
Let us rather tackle the subject and be thankfull to people that are
kind enough to offer their help, right, wrong or insuficient and
correct in a good way, than breaking down peoples personalities. If we
can do that, we will not kill a good programme like clayart.

Clay greetings
Antoinette

A few days ago I sent in a transparent glaze recipe which contains Lead
Bisilicate. Of cause one should not use lead in any form in functional
pottery, because it is soluble in alkalies and also in some acids and
lead is poisonous for the human body. One should only use it on
non-functional ware like tiles. I guess that one can look at a fritt as
a substitute, but this might be a too soft glaze to use for dinnerware.
So ,sorry Amy Parker, I just learned from Tom Buck that you are a
functional potter. This glaze will not work for you. I will look into
THE POTTER`S BOOK OF GLAZE RECIPES of Emmanuel Cooper and see if I can
find something for you to test. So you just let me know if you are
interested.
Take care.
Antoinette.
