clay for tiles

updated thu 3 jun 99

my supplier has sold me some clay for tiles that they claim is fine for =
firing
between cone 02-10. Most of my experience is with cone 6 so I'll probably =
fire
to 6, but how can a clay have that wide a firing range. Wouldn't you not =
have
the desired hardness at 02? It apparently has a fair amount of grog in it =
if
that is a clue for anyone. Used for tile and sculptural pieces.

Yes - many suppliers do that - it's rediculus. You will have to fire the
clay at different temps - or the temp you want to fire at and find out the
shrikage and absorbancy. Let me know if you need to know how to do that.

You need a clay which vitrifies to about 2% absorbency to make sure ware
will not leak or absorb water.

I assume you have not registered for the course - there are only two
registered and they will not run it unless there are 10.
