Hi Donn...here are a couple of Kaki glazes from my past, both cone 9-10
reduction; Rhode's Kaki, black or iron red, sometimes coffee and cream
where thin. Albany slip 65/ neph sye 35. The next glaze I found to
be a fat meaty one, excellent as a glaze or underglaze. Albany slip 50/ neph
sye 50. And yes, I still have a little Albany slip that I hope will
outlast me! Lori in New Port Richey where I have recently adopted an aging
cat and puppy from the SPCA!! And the coffee table is covered with how to
train your new puppy books instead of clay (books that is).

Donn,

I don't have the formula you mention ..... but I am sure someone else will
provide you with that info. Couple of other thoughts though.

I had been firing kaki (persimmon) glazes for years and had come to the
conclusion that they are best in neutral to oxidation fire. Long cooling
is important....and particularly without a lot of ember bed to cause much
reduction on the cooling phase. So I ususally fire them in certain
chambers of my noborigama for that effect. While I was in Mashiko a while
back, Sato-sensi and I discussed those thoughts and he confirmed them for
me.

You also will want to try putting the kaki glaze on over a very thin layer
of a feldspathic clear glaze like =22Leach Clear=22. Makes the surface =
sheen a
lot nicer...... at least for the real Mashiko Stone.

BTW...... if you have someone who speaks Japanese handy and are willing to
PAY...... the ceramic cooperative in Mashiko would probably be willing to
sell you some of the real raw material. Shipping'll kill ya=22 =3Cg=3E.

Best,
