Years back I had trouble with a potter's wheel and when the fellow I asked to
examine the problem opened it up the oil began running out. He asked for
something quick to catch it. I gave him the nearest pot, a nice one, and he
filed it 1/2 up draining the fluid. Later when I found it nearly impossible
to rid the nice bowl of it I put it in a cone 10 reduction kiln. It reached
red heat fine and body reduced OK, but just as I turned to go to the house to
await the next turn up I heard the thud noise and went back to examine it and
saw no pots nor shelves in the upper two ports. However I saw the remains of
the pots and silicon carbide shelves in the lowest port in the bottom peep.
The roof had a few loose brick in the arch and little structural damage but
the load and furniture were a total loss. Had there been more in the bowl who
knows what would have happened. At least I was heating the stuff from cold. I
can only imagine what putting oil into a hot flame or hot environment would
have done....i.e.raku
