We are planning to fire our wood kiln this coming week at =5E10 to =5E11. =
One of
the new glazes we'd like to try contains Avery Kaolin. I now find that =
this
mine has been closed and Avery is no longer available. The glaze is already
mixed except for the missing ingredient.

Any one with glaze formulation software, or more knowledge than I, about =
glaze
chemistry, who could give suggestions, here's the recipe:

Val Cushings Orange Flash Shino
a.. 55 neph. sy.
b.. 15 petalite
c.. 12 soda ash
d.. 12 Avery Kaolin
e.. 6 OM=234 ball clay
Any substitution ideas?

Thanks

Jane

Jane. If you can still get HELMAR KAOLIN, it can be used in place for Avery
for flashing purposes.. I have even used EPK and had good flashing
results.....

I'm not sure of the precise makeup of the two kaolins and their
differences, but substituting Helmer kaolin in clay bodies seems to work very
nicely in my wood kiln.
Helmer kaolin is available from the Archie Bray Institute in Montana. The
glaze recipe seems quite typical for a carbon trap shino a number of which
use EPK kaolin for the kaolin engredient. I should emphasize that I am not
an expert but just an amateur who likes the shino glazes in my kiln.

Most Kaolins are very similar so sub whichever one you have - like EPK -
most of the colour will come from the body if you don't have any in your
glaze - high iron bodies give the most colour with most shino glazes - in
my experience.

You can use grolleg if you think that having less TiO2 will make a
difference but it will probably have less iron than the EPK. Avery had
higher iron than most kaolins and probably flashed better because if that.
Helmer has more iron than most of our available kaolins but not as much as
the Avery.
