reed and bamboo

one of the great misconceptions or confusions is
what is reed?
good, high quality reed is grown in the bracken water
along sea coasts.
most handles that we buy for teapots (canecraft) are
from great britain, grown along the eastern sea coast.
reed has been used for pens for years.........have seen
some in iraq that was maybe 100 years old and still worked
great for writing. much of reed is fire hardened, or
scorched.........have a wonderful reed spear used for fishing
in borneo, hard as rock on the end.
cane craft bends their handles with heat........torches.
great stuff, and really tough.
bamboo is bamboo. also tough.

i have a letter from fred nettleship who was the first reed teapot
handle guy that we found (1959). it say's `mel, may our crafts blend
together in beauty and harmony, your friend, fred`.
