I'm looking at Shimpos, they're available close at hand and convienent but
I'm confused,

What kind of drive system do the new Shimpo RK-10s really have? I've seen
inside but I can't see a cone. What is the little lever on the side of the
motor working?

"Krueger: The RK-10 wheel uses a Ring/Cone drive system which provides
exceptionally smooth speed control over a long pedal sweep."

"A.R.T: The cone/pulley a stainless steel cone mounted on the end of an AC
motor turning at one constant speed (for maximum torque). The cone moves
along a hard rubber pulley and the friction and varying diameters of the
cone provide the drive and variable speed. Used by Shimpo on the RK10
models."

"Great Lakes: RK10 Series - These wheels boast a patented metallic-traction
drive system engineered by Shimpo which provides more wheel throwing
capacity with less horsepower. This unique drive allows for smooth
responsive variable speeds from 0 to 250 rpms. Especially precise at lower
speeds necessary for decorating."

I think I've seen the motor and cone assembly in spare parts and the cone is
big, makes the assembly look like a bullet.

And then I'm confused about the torque:

"Shimpo's Add CM February 99: Unlike conventional dc motor drives the RK10's
patented RX infinitely adjustable speed drive system automatically increases
torque as much as 700% at speeds as low as 1 RPM - Plenty of power at slow
speed" In the same add they show a picture of Geoff Searle's '70 RK-2 (with
the flames painted on it) and some spare parts including what must be a
spare ring, looks like a BIG donut.

I can very easily stop the wheel head at what I guess is 1 revolution per
minute on a new one. Is there some kind of adjustment that can be made? Is
this less likely to happen on the Super than on the Basic?

And the free wheeling "banding wheel" mode isn't really all that free. I
think I'd prefer to use the very slowest speed for banding/decorating.

I sent a note to Shimpo but got no reply.

So here I am confused (not an unusual state)
