ClayArtists:
In a few weeks I will be attending my third Raku firing and have been on the
lookout for Raku glaze recipes. I found numerous recipes on the following
websites:
http://www.utpb.edu/artsci/art/ceramics/glazes/raku.htm
http://netnow.micron.net/~gafergus/rakuglaz.htm
http://www.digitalfire.com/education/glaze/buckraku.htm
http://ceramics.tqn.com/glraku.htm
I will be trying three new recipes this time around:
Juicy Turquoise Raku Glaze
(a Gordon Hutchens recipe)
Gerstley Borate.............80
Nepheline Syenite..........20
add:
Lithium Carbonate..........40
Copper Carbonate............3
-end
Raku Slip Resist
(from Steve Forbes-de Soule)
Fire Clay...............50
EPK......................30
Alumina Hydrate.....20
This is applied to the bisqued clay and cracks apart as it dries.
When the piece is raku fired, the smoke enters through the cracks.
After firing, the slip is scraped off to reveal the smoky pattern.
While the glaze is still damp, you can encourage your own
patterns to develop by scratching the pattern into the glaze
before it shrinks.
-end
Blue Hawaiian Raku
(Sept. '98 Ceramics Monthly's response to a letter requesting the recipe)
Bone ash.............20
Gerstley borate.....80
add:
Tin oxide.................1.3
Copper carbonate.....5
Cobalt oxide............2.5
Recipe note: do not overfire or overreduce.
-end
If anyone is interested in how these recipes turn out, e-mail me and I will
let you know. If anyone tries other recipes from the various websites, let
us all know how they turn out.
Happy Rakuing

Linda,
Is there really 40 percent lithium carb in the turquiose raku glaze, or
was that a misprint? Sounds like a lot...........Em

Em,
Yes, 40 percent Lithium carbonate does sound like a lot, so I double checked
in response to your query. My record shows that it is the correct percentage
for the recipe and not a misprint.
In fact, in looking at other Raku glaze recipes, I came across another that
has a high percentage of Lithium carb:
Lithium Blue Satin Raku
Steve Forbes-deSoule
Silica.........................54.6
Lithium carbonate.......27.8
Kaolin........................12.1
Soda ash.....................3.5
Bentonite........................1
Bone ash........................1
Add:
Copper carbonate............3.7
Happy testing.
