Now that Vince Pitelka and Dannon Rhudy have pretty much signed off Clayart
for the Summer, we are free to talk behind their backs. Clayart is a "many
headed beast", but surely the tireless contributions of these two make them as
integral to it's worth as any one of us could hope to be. I wanted to remind
those of you for whom the Northwestern Corner of the U.S. will be convenient
this summer that Vince and Dannon will be offering week long workshops at my
home/farm/studio in Northwest Washington.

Vince's "Pattern & Imagery with Colored Clay" will run from July 19th through
23rd, and his "Ancient Clay Workshop" will run from July 26th through the
30th. Dannon's workshop "Order out of Chaos: Pots of Purpose from Greenware
Molds" will run August 2nd through 6th. Full information on each of the
workshops as well as each of the presenters is available on my web site:
http://www2.memes.com/mmpots , just take the link to Vince & Dannon's Summer
Workshops on my home page and follow your interests from there.

For those who may be lacking either the time or the money to participate in
any of the workshops, Vince and Dannon will be getting together to give a
presentation in Bellingham on the evening of July 30th. The Whatcom Museum of
History and Art will be hosting it in the Rotunda Room of the main museum
building. Admission will be free. We are still firming up the details on this,
and I will post again once I can give the specific hours and such. Please make
plans to attend this presentation if possible. It's a chance to meet our good
cyberfriends in the flesh, and round out our impressions of them...

As I promised, I'm posting announcement of the free presentation by our own
Dannon Rhudy and Vince Pitelka on July 30th at 7:30 PM in the Rotunda Room at
the Whatcom Museum of History and Art, Bellingham, WA, which has graciously
agreed to co-sponsor the event.

After agreeing to "co-sponsor" the talk, the Museum asked for a title and
brief synopsis. I figure I might as well share those here:

Title: Two Passions

Synopsis: Two passionate and dedicated potter/educators will present through
slides and lectures, themselves, their wide ranging work with clay, and
hopefully something of the spirit that moves them to this form of expression.
Vince Pitelka, Head of the Clay Department at Tennessee Tech.'s Appalachian
Center for Crafts, has a passion and understanding of clay that is broad and
deep as an ocean swell. At the crest of his wave these days is his work in
"Colored Clay Marquetry", a technique that he uses for its' intense colors and
strong imagery. Dannon Rhudy, recently featured in Ceramics Monthly Magazine,
currently teaches and creates her pots in Paris, Texas. She describes her
work: ".a constant theme of organic shapes and surfaces, overlaid with random
and accidental marks and colors, all related to the plants and landscapes of
my early memory. I prefer forming and firing techniques which allow for and
encourage a wide variety of such random accidents, integrating form and
surface in ways which cannot be wholly predetermined"

Vince and Dannon are in Whatcom County giving a series of week long workshops
in various aspects of clay work at the home and studio of Michael McDowell,
near Ferndale. For more information on the workshops, see the web page at
http://www2.memes.com/mmpots, or call Michael McDowell at 384-2543.

Do put this on your calendar if you are within range of Bellingham this
summer. It would be nice to have a good turnout, and Vince and Dannon are
bound to put on a good show!
