There will be those who will carry on about how David McDonald should have
tested more and that he only has himself to blame and that all clay bodies
change overtime etc. etc. etc. but I am not going to be one of them. If
what we are being told is accurate, it is absolutely amazing to me that in
this day and age a major supplier can be so cavalier about the quality of
it's clay. Incredible that a large company does not have a proper testing
and development programme. And, to put it mildly, it is bloody awful that a
company goes on selling a product that it knows has changed considerably,
has problems and will almost certainly create serious difficulties for some
of its customers unless fired in a specific manner (which until now has not
been divulged) or it won't be sound. I also find it hard to believe that
silica sand is no longer available in California. I am suspicious of the
reason for the change.

However difficult it may be for David, who in my opinion seems to be an
extraordinarily patient person, I would suggest a change of clay and
supplier as soon as possible. As far as I am aware both Bailey and Shimpo (
I am not a share holder in either one of them, unfortunately) supply a range
of clays that are tested on a regular basis. There may be others in your
specific area.
