saving the world: gas vs. electric

For those interested in saving the world from us, the inhabitants, I
suggest you turn your browser to www.co2.org
This a group in Oxford, England, which studies CO2 emissions and how we
can make amends for the damage we do.

In my planning consultancy work for Compassion in World Farming
(opposing factory farming) I use figures from the Carbon Storage Trust
which show how many hectares of mature UK forest are needed for a given
emission of CO2. A working estimate is that one hectare of forest can
lock about 100 tonnes of CO2. This would cost in carbon offsets #5.45
per tonne of CO2 (#20 per tonne of carbon). CO2 is 27.27% by weight
Carbon.

Perhaps some Clayarters would like to calculate what their emissions are
costing the world environment, and how they can make due recompense.

One made the comment to me that we small fry are causing more emissions
than the large factories, plate for plate, so we do not have good green
credentials. Perhaps we should all live in the middle of new sustainable
forests. Ah, what a lovely thought.

dave, you imply that the average salt firing gives off significant amounts
of chlorine. in fact, it is hardly measurable. 99% of stack effluent from
salting is salt water vapor. just what mom says is good for a stuffy nose.
as for ssalting in electric--it is done routinely. Nils
