Dear Clayarters,
I wonder if someone could help me with a good weather resistant
glaze at Cone 6. I need this for a tile, and would really appreciate any
assistance and advice. I guess two colors would be great, or one glaze to
which I can add different colorants. This would be going on Cone 6
stoneware.
Thanks in advance.
Hope everyone is having a great summer, now that it has started officially!

It's probably not really a question of finding a 'weather resistant'
glaze. Nearly all glazes will withstand being outside. Did you have a
particular type of weather in mind? E.g. the extremes of desert
conditions or winters that are wet and freezing?
I suspect that what you really need to know relates as much to the clay
body as the glaze. It seems to me that you could choose almost any glaze
you wanted as far as actual resistance to the weather is concerned. The
clay body and glaze fit are probably more important variables.
If you think a shiny, well-balance glaze would be best here's a basic ^6
recipe.
any Feldspar 45
China clay 5
Bentonite 2
Whiting 18
Zinc ox. 6
Silica 24
Add any of the usual colouring / opacifying oxides / stains to get the
colours you'd like.
Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Mike.
