OK, here is the issue. I have an Olympic kiln that was practically given to
me. However, I have to rewire the the whole thing- includining the elements.
I alreadt fire to Cone 6 all the time. I was wondering if it would be
difficult to convert the kiln to gas. I already have a 100# tank and all
the hardware from an old raku kiln. My question is this, will cutting a hole
in the lid- a round top- loader, comprimise the structure and how should I
approach introducing the burner. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Ted- Interesting question. Cutting a hole in the lid will not compromise
the lid as long as you do it carefully-gently that is. You can mount a
burner in the center of the base aiming straight up, then place a high
alumina target brick above the hole to deflect the flame out. Stack
your bottom shelf so as to leave a couple of inches space between it and
your target brick. This will create a combustion area. You can stilt
another brick above the exit hole to slow down the flow of the kiln
gasses more or less.-

Ted.
I have an old Dunkin 7cu ft. electric kiln that a friend gave me. He
converted it to propane but had never fired it. It had a two burner system
underneath with venturi burners, and a 3=22 round hole at the top. couldn't
get the darn thing past =5E06. then I got a Summit conversion kit that is a
4 burner system and you can use the regular shelves sized for your electric
kiln. Very easy to convert. Just need a hack saw and screw driver. the
burner unit gets screwed on to the base and they send a template for
cutting the holes in the bottom and top so you can't go wrong. I use a 12 =
=22
piece of chimney pipe raised about 2=22 above the exit hole with pieces of
fire brick. Can get the middle and top to =5E10 in 7.5 hours. The bottom to
=5E8. (Am still trying to figure how to raise the temp at the bottom.)

I tried this address for the web site and could not find anything about kiln

electric
kiln. Thanks for your experience and suggestions.

Hi Ted,
I'm sure one of the kiln experts will give you the info you need. I just
want to encourage you to do it. The BEST raku kiln I've ever used was a
converted electric. It had 4 holes (about 2" in diam) cut in the top and had
2 burners.
Best of luck,
Karen in Sonoma

our art department was graciously donated an electric kiln, AMACO HF97...we
have a sililar kiln that we converted with a propane propane burner to a
RAKU kiln succesfully and have been getting great results from for the past
two years. well, we had toyed with the idea of turning our RAKU kiln into a
salt or soda kiln the current one being replaced with my independant study
project in RAKU kiln building.
so, we now have another kiln to attempt this conversion. has anybody
done something along the same lines and have any suggestions as to how to
convert the kiln?
thank you,
aaron tester
