I alreadt fire to Cone 6 all the time. I was wondering if it would be
difficult to convert the kiln to gas. I already have a 100# tank and all
the hardware from an old raku kiln. My question is this, will cutting a hole
in the lid- a round top- loader, comprimise the structure and how should I
approach introducing the burner.>>
I devote quite a bit of space in my book "Raku: A Practical Approach" to kiln
building and specifically converting an electric kiln to gas. This is the
type of kiln I use most often. Go for it! Cutting a hole in the top does
compromise the integrity of the lid but not very much and as long as you keep
the band tight and don't abuse the lid it will be fine. You can introduce the
burner by either cutting a hole in the side of the kiln towards the bottom or
you can set the kiln on a base of soft brick in which you have included a
burner port. Either way will work.
