well, we are getting closer to solving the problems of the train kiln.
we are sure that it is a wood problem, not a kiln problem....thanks to
tony and others for help and care, we are not going to bomb the
thing, or tear it down.
i was lucky enough to get four really great pieces from the fire, so i have
no complaints....the soda ash on my shino just turned jet black, and gave
me a set of pix for the wood fire conference in iowa. folks will think
kurt and i
are jack troy clones..........but, alas, we will not be able to pull that off.
we are checking now with some of the re/cycle/resource people that are getting
scrap kiln dried wood from a factory....it is throw away, but perfect for our
needs.....we have a bundle of oak up on sticks and it will be ready in a couple
of months.
we have a great deal of pine and will get it dry.
it is a classic case of us getting excited about the kiln, and not dealing
with the fuel...we thought butch at the mill would have three bundles just
sitting their waiting....but, he just laughed at us...`hey, youse guys, you
only get what i just cut, i`m not leaving stuff around here rotting,
waiting for
you.`..............(his mill yard is so neat, things piled perfect all over...)
he had two bundles of oak that were like two years old, but we could not
get it out of the ditch. so, we were stuck. bad potters, bad wood guys, tony
called us names and stuff.
so, as usual, doctor cure yourself....and the crow tastes rather good with
a bbq sauce. but, in all seriousness, it has been a great project, we are
learning new things, and will continue to share it when it happens.
we will get pots ready, and fire before the iowa conference, and have things
to show.
but, if we are still having problems, well, so be it.
