electric raku & my neighbor, chojiro

well i cannot say i did that, but my neighbor did. he saw me firing pots
raku earlier with my good ol'gutted electric branfman-style, with a
piepenburg burner and five gallon tank. he went on to try himself. he
didn't want to raku together. i got the impression he thought i was just a
dumb kid and he could do it the first time without me since he had a
reputation as a potter for over 20 years, and i had a reputation as a
hacker for 20 weeks.

later i saw him out of the corner of my eye sprinting out of his studio
with red hot pots. i remember thinking how he had to navigate thirty feet
around work benches, clutter, and stuff. another fifteen feet outside; that
it wasn't a straight shot to reduction at all. i felt bad he opted for the
electric method. i also remember the crashing of lamps-to-be onto the
steps, down, to the brand new garbage can that was set with crumpled full
sheets of newspaper awaiting the entirely oxidized things. one after
another cracking pots slipped from the glow of fireplace tongs. lo and
behold - a few actually made it to the can. some rim shots, but two points
is two.

soonafter, the smoldering, lone stanky green rubbermaid sculpture signaled
the end of the event - never since repeated. i guess there's not much data
in that. 'cept that was perhaps the first raku experience without a flame
of any kind?

i once saw a potter couple promote their work with "having respect for the
process".
