After 25 years of teaching, one of the most important things I have learned
is that my job, along with being dicipline based, is to show as many
techniques as I can, right/wrong, good/bad, backward/forward and explain,
demonstrate, explain, demonstrate. It is the student's job to choose the past
best suited to the individual. I have a woman with 2 inch nails ("I will NOT
cut my nails", she exclaimed) who throws beautifully, she uses her knuckles
for almost everything, and I have a man who uses his right hand inside the
pot when he throws. I am amazed when I watch them. I, on the other hand,
taught myself to throw and did not know you had to use water, so I didn't and
I now throw with a drop of water here and there. This too amazes people. I
can't tell you all of the benefits of not using water. I make large, tiny
footed platters that are thrown virtually horizontal and they do not
collapse. So it is really to each his own. Few things won't work. Something
may not work for me, but that does not mean................
