Hello everyone,
I am looking for a low fire to mid fire range glaze, that is similar to
Tom Coleman's Mud Crack glaze. I believe his recipe is 50% neph. sye. &
50% magnesium. This is a cone 10 glaze. It is a cracked surface, similar
to the floor of a dried up river bed.

thanks,

The source of magnesium in this glaze is magnesium carbonate. Have you
tried this receipe at cone 6? Do that first and see how it looks. You'll
have a better idea of where to go from there. Also, I think the originator
of this formula is F. Carlton Ball. Always good to give credit to those
that are due. He did a mean chun as well!

Why not take this same glaze, add a tiny bit more neph
sy to the mix, maybe do a line blend, 55 NS, 45 MgCO
or something..on up to 70 NS, 30 MgCO ... might get
something more appropriate for the work you want to do
at lower temps. PLease feel free to contact me
off-list if you want more ideas for crunchy stuff at
cone 3-6.

I recently did a bunch of tests out of Chappell's Clay and Glazes. With the
chemicals we have in our studio the following glaze came out as a mud flat
crackle kind of glaze. It's SG-35 Clear Gloss Glaze for cone 6. That's not
how it came out though.
Neph Sy 35.5
Magnesium Carb 14.6
Zinc Oxide 11.9
Epk 2.4
silica 35.6
and bentonite 1 %
