Hello to all-

I've been lurking for a few months and have been following this topic with
interest....I make functional mid range (cone 6) stone ware, and have =
always,
since i started taking money for my pots, instead of giving them away, =
dutifully
marked and priced my =22seconds=22. These, I learned in school, are pots =
that are
still structurally sound and safe for everyday use, but they have SMALL =
=22s=22
cracks on the bottoms, never all the way through and rarely more than 1/2 =
inch
long and 1/8 inch deep. When this happens, (aprox. 1 in 10 or 12 mugs) I =
accept
it as the price of my not trimming the pots and usually mark them down from=
=2415
to =2412.

My question to you, oh wise ones is- WHY?

I didn't think to ask this while i was in school, and now am curious- I =
mean,
these cracks don't grow or expand once the pots are out of the kiln, they =
don't
affect the function of the pots and, if i didn't tell my customers about =
said
cracks, i am sure that 95=25 of them would never notice them...Is this an =
academic
affectation or does it have some historic or functional precedent?

I'm not looking for excuses for bilking my customers, nor am i trying to =
call
down the pottery police. I just am curious about how and why this practice =
got
started?

looking forward to more interesting comments..
