website promotion

We're a couple of weeks away from D-day for the
website. I was wondering what others have done to
promote their site. I know the basics -- listing with
search engines, telling everybody you know your URL.
What else has worked?

Well, I have put my site on my business cards, and the bottom of my warez.
But, well putting your site address in the last posting would have me looking
at your site, and referring 1) my page if I liked it and 2) to my clay people
not on this server and well what is it any way???

Berry,
Another thing is to try and link with as many sites as possible.
A 'you do mine and I'll do yours' type of thing.
That counts very high with the search engines for some reason.
Also, a good resource is the 'Web Site Journal" an free online listing of
tips and facts and how-to.
Found at : http://www.WebSiteJournal.com

Hope this helps, Frank Gaydos

All communications can provide the URL address - particularly your Email
messages.
It may be a nuisance to type in an accurate URL on each and every message.
SO: You can create an automatic signature block that will be a part of your
email message.

Follows is instructions for doing so on Netscape:

Perhaps someone can provide the method used on AOL , Explorer or other
systems.

On Netscape:
Begin by writing your "signature file" on a notebook text file.
EX:
Mary Potalot
Potalot Pottery - on scenic Oregon Coast
http://www.potalotpottery.com (use complete URL address including "http://")

(Note: this is a nonexistent web site)

SAVE your file on your system and write down the address.
EX:
C\email\sig.txt

NEXT
On your Netscape browser:
CLICK on Edit (on top tool bar)
CLICK on Preferences (bottom of list)
CLICK on identity (under Mail & Newsgroups)

In the signature file slot - type in the signature file location saved
earlier -
EX:
C\email\sig.txt
CLICK "OK"
**************************
To check - open New Message and send yourself a message . The signature
block will appear at the bottom of your message. Click on the URL - you
should automatically activate your web site - If not you can go back and
edit your signature file - remember include " http:// " in your URL address.

Most systems provide instruction on setting up a Signature Block in the
"Help" area.

If you look at The CoA links page (http://www.the-coa.org.uk/07links right
at the bottom under "Helpers and exchange links" is a link to BRUCE CLAY
(how's that for an appropriate name! Eh, folks?).

This is the best information that anyone can give!! He is a web designer and
really does give "the works" on site promotion as well as anything else...
Including the low-down on COPYRIGHT which may interest those recently
questioning web site rules and regulations re: copyright of images, pots,
etc.

Lots of links to other interesting sites (like Web Site Journal as Frank has
recommended below) and tips such as how to get meta tags right, etc. etc. Do
not be put off by the jargon (if you are a beginner) it soon "rubs off". I
started in February and look where we are now?!?! A whole hundred hits
counted today... That is TOTAL not in one day! Guess I should read Bruce a
bit more too!!

Good luck!
