Well.. when I worked at a tile factory, which will remain nameless, the kiln
staff were known to open an inspection door on the side of the roller hearth
kiln ( at the 'cold' end 4-500F) and bung their pizzas in there to heat them
up. I've cooked soup on top of a flue stone - nice place to sit when it's
Midwest Winter outside, too.
Then, in the U.K., when we didn't have tumble dryers, we put our wet clothes
on clothes-horses and dried them around the kiln. And I know of at least one
potter in the U.K. who uses the heat from firing for hot water and radiators
in the house. How about that for appropriate technology?
