Does anyone know what would happen if I put an oxide wash on bisqued tiles
and fired them to cone 2 (quarry tile ^2 clay and or tile and sculpture^10
clay maybe to a higher cone?).Will the tiles stick together if I stacked them
as in the bisque firing? Will stacking make the oxide wash look odd?I am
thinking of then tiling my floors and using a sealant as one would use with
Saltillo tiles.I was originally planning to glaze the tiles but I am hoping
for a more rustic Santa Fe style look as well as finally finishing this
project since I am hoping the "naked" tile idea will be faster! Do oxide
washes look different after a reduction vs. oxidation?I really appreciate any
help on this.TIA from Dale in the sweltering prairie of SE Colorado:"If it's

I have been pondering a similar problem. I would like to use an oxide on the
unglazed foot on pots fired to cone 6 in an oxidation or reduction atmosphere.
My best guess is that the oxides will flux the clay somewhat and things will be
stuck in place. I bet Clyde knows the answer to this. Seems like a SE Colorado
problem deserves an Ark Valley answer. Dale are you going to UVAPAPA? Blowin'
in Boyero. James Bowen

Dale,
It is hard to beat the 98 cents/tile price on saltillo tiles from Home Depot.
They are approx. 12" square and quite thick. Their use increases the value of
your home. Largest expense is their installation. It's heavy work, but if I ca
do it....you can too???? I have even cut small squares in transition places,
you can also break them (or use broken ones) to create mosaic designs i strategi
places. Please reconsider buying versus making.

My brother, husband and I laid 1500 sf of saltillo tiles from Home Depot. We
cut the corners off about half of them and inlaid slate. There were several
boxes left over, so I experimented with dying them. I used Rit fabric dye in
5 gallon buckets and left the tiles in from 1 to 5 days. After re-drying
them for two weeks, I seal coated them with sealant from Aldon, which is
available online. The results were surprisingly good though I didn't install
the tiles anywhere. I still have 100 sf or so untouched and have been
considering playing with glazes on them. There are many ways to enjoy
clay... even if you start from someplace in the middle.
