I plan on building a raku kiln from a 55 gal. drum and intend to line it =
with
koa wool.
My question is what stack diameter should I use and is there a damper =
involved.
What should the stack be constructed of, stove pipe? Can the stack be =
mounted
off center to accommodate the lifting cables? Does anyone know of a web site
having any pictures or construction methods for this type kiln(I.e. vertical=
55
gal drum)?

Tony,
The book by Steve Branfman "raku a pratical approach" is well worth
purchasing. Loaded with all kinds of Raku info and tons of kiln Pictures.
Robert Pipenburg's " Raku Pottery" is another that comes to mind that is
also wonderfully illustrated. I would highly recommed either. Steve is
available through the list and e-mail and has been most helpful about
questions concerning the raku process. Good luck! Douglas Adams

Douglas,
Thanks so much for your reply. I wonder if Borders Books might have these
books in stock? You wouldn't happen to know where I can order the
buttons/wire for fastening the wool to the drum would you?
Thanks again,
Tony

Tony:
I'm reasonably certain that all the items you require for a raku kiln are
available from Marc Ward of Ward Burner Systems in Dandridge, Tennessee, Zip
37725, Telephone: 423-397-2914, Fax 423-397-1253, email : wardburner@aol.com
He can also answer any questions you might have about raku kiln construction.
He has been very helpful to me in the past and very reliable too.
All the best.
