anyone outside of ca want to recommend their hometowns?

My husband and I are looking to relocate. I'm interested in "art
communities" (places that are fertile grounds for artists, writers,
photographers, particularly clay arts) with reasonably priced housing (This
leaves out places the entire state of California, and places like Santa Fe
and Aspen). I'd love to be within driving distance of a college with a
strong ceramics lab/studio/curriculum.

And we're also considering Canada (just gotta figure out how he works
telecommuting to San Diego while I become a Canadian citizen...).

I'm hitting the road at the end of August to check out places all over
North America, so anyone who wants to promote their area I'd love to here
from you. I'm dying to find a place with 3.5-4 seasons, weekend access to
culture and a real sense of community, especially among the artists.

Thanks so much and once we're settled I'll try to be more active on the
list. It's just I can't answer too many of the ceramics tech questions, but
if anyone needs some web, graphics or computer help, I'd be happy to payoff
my "debt".

Carolyn,

As an ex-Californian, I would have to say I know whereof you speak. I
think anywhere from Eugene, Oregon north through to BC, Canada would do.
(I apologize to any in the Ashland, Oregon, area, it just isn't far enough
away from California) Where you might settle in this area would depend to
a great degree on how much "Weather" you really want. If you REALLY want
seasons, the coast of Maine is potter friendly and beautiful too. I am
sure there are other places that people will post about, and I have seen
pictures, but I have not been there to say for sure.

I've been looking for the same sort of place so how about compiling a list of
the suggestions you get and post them to the list.
Thanks
Dinah

How about Berea, Kentucky?

You might want to consider the Athens, Georgia area. I too wanted to
relocate my pottery studio and found a studio in Watkinsville, 8 miles south
of Athens. UGA has one of the top 5 research libraries in the country. And
there are quite a few artists in the area; both clay and hot glass artists;
and of course painters. I have found the people here to be most friendly.
And to top it off the Lyndon House Arts Center will re-open after its' 6
million dollar renovation in just two weeks. The Lyndon House Arts Center is
modeled after the Penland School of Crafts and will have teaching
opportunities in sculpture, ceramics, metals, textiles, woodworking,
painting, and drawing. Athens is a great place to live and work. Atlanta is
only an hour and 15 minutes drive away. Good luck, Jim

You might want to consider Saguache, Colorado in the NorthWest corner of
the San Luis Valley, the world's largest alpine valley. We are rural
with a population of just over 6,000 in a county the size of 3 Rhode
Islands. Denver, Boulder, Santa Fe, Taos etc. are all within a three to
four hour drive and have libraries, museums, universities, etc.
Additionally there are clay suppliers who make regular deliveries to
this area. There are some commercial properties with excellant pottery
and residential potential here in town. There are also 15 to 20 folks
making at least part of their living here as well as many more in other
parts of the county. Several of these are potters and we have a gallery
featuriing wonderful pottery combined with a coffeehouse serving the
best
coffees and espresso based drinks within MANY miles. Property prices
are low compared to almost anywhere. I could go on but must get a
shipment ready for UPS. Feel free to make contact if you want more
information.
