gas kiln flue size/flue placement

Decisions, decisions. I'm moving(taking down, rebuilding) my gas
kiln and doing modifications
to the original plan. The kiln is an IFB downdraft propane kiln.
It will have 2 Ransome B4 venturis rearmounted. The kiln is
about 40 cu ft and will have a 12 foot high chimney. I don't use
reduction(please no mud slinging) and here are my quandaries:
My original (4) sidemounted burner ports were 4.5"/5" and my
burners with pilot burners below were a tight fit, with the
pilot flame hitting the bricks. I'm tempted to enlarge the ports
to 4.5"/7.5" thus giving a total port size of 67.5" sq in. So my
flue would need to be the same size, 9"/7.5". I've gotten
opinions on both sides of this larger burner port issue....Any
more strong opinions out there?

Also I've gotten different opinions on flue placement. Some
suggest dropping the flue into the floor with a flue channel.
Another scenario is having the flue floor even with the kiln
floor and placing bricks along the edges of the bottom shelves,
creating a flue to draw from the front of the kiln.

Right now I'm leaning towards the larger ports and a flue
opening dropped 2.5" into the floor.
It would then stick up above the level of the first shelf.

Any help would be appreciated.
