Hi all,
Speaking of posts and shelves, read something interesting in Ceramics
Monthly. Apparently there is a product called: ITC100HT that is distributed
by International Technical Ceramics of Florida. This is a shelf coating that
is applied one time only with no flaking. Can put on both sides of the
shelves. The glaze comes off with a tap and to top it all off it produces a
higher thermal rating if coated on both sides. I am afraid to ask the
price. Seems ideal for a school situation where students often put the glaze
on too thick and it runs on the shelf. How many hours do you spend cleaning
and kiln washing ? Has anyone out there tried it? Let us know.

Dear Joyce,

I have done this and it works. The only thing is that you do have to chisel
the glaze off with a hammer and chisel, so be prepared to do that with eye
protection, etc. Then you have to re-coat that area with the ITC product.
At least that is how it works for me.

Something I also do is that I have made up small discs of clay and I coat
them with ordinary kiln wash and place them under my pots, so while I use
them over and over, they are disposable if I don't care to clean off a bad
runny glaze. The only time it gets on the shelf is if there is some unusual
situation when the glaze jumps off the pot and goes beyond the disc.

Hope this might help or answer your concern. Fr. Anthony
