Hi everybody,
For oatmeal Carlton Ball used 2.0% powdered ilmenite and a pinch of
granular ilmenite added to a waxy matt glaze - recipe follows:
(Cones 9-10)
Feldspar - 41%
Gerstley Borate - 12%
Dolomite - 7%
Talc - 15%
Kaolin - 5%
Silica - 20%
I believe he also added some red iron oxide for a darker oatmeal.
Incidentally, here in Montesano, Wa., we had a 5.9 earthquake July 2, and
we are just a few miles from the epicenter. I lost many taller bottles,
lots of small necks broke off, not to mention greenware, chemicals and
books dumped from shelves. We heard banging and crashing all over the
place. I suppose in earthquake country it would be wise to use museum clay
or such under the more vulnerable things, but then it's been 30 years since
the last one. I would have been upset if I (or someone else) had caused
this much damage, but can't argue with the forces of nature!
Luck with the glaze
