white middle range clay body

I am looking for a white middle range 4-6 clay body.

What does this sound like?

Kaolin 50
Ball 25
Ny.Sy. 15
Flint 10

Along with this I would appreciate advice on what clays to use. I was
thinking KT #1-4 or Tenn #10 for my ball clay (Who stocks Tenn#10?) and
Sapphire, Grolleg or #6 Tile are options for me in the Kaolin area. What
about white burning stonewares? Are there any?

I am guessing it is a pretty "pasty putty like" clay with so much non-clay
material in it.

Presently we are using a true high fire porcelain and would like to move
down to more of a white stoneware.

Thanks from the Heartland,

C. T. Wagoner

Hi C.T.,

Here's a white-burning stoneware clay bodies that I just recently found on
the Studio Potter website. I haven't tested it yet, though.

Val Cushing C 4/6 White Stoneware Body

Goldart clay 20
EPK 20
OM-4 Ball Clay 20
Nepheline syenite 20
Flint 5
Hawthorne Bond clay 15

Let me know how it goes. BTW, where in the Heartland are you?

I like Tennesse #1 ball clay for my white stoneware. No ball clays
are really 'white', but I like the grey-tone off-white of Tenn. #1 more
than some others that go towards brown.
Goldart is a pretty white firing stoneware clay (again, it's really more
grey), but it is extremely variable. I'm not too happy with the last batch
I got because it has a lot of iron spots. I guess you would want to buy
one bag and try it before you bought a lot. A small amount might
help your body by adding more particle sizes to the mix. If you don't
use Goldart, I would consider using a small amount of fireclay, maybe
10%, to serve that purpose. It will make the clay more brown, but
it will be less 'pasty' to work with.

I have also run tests with Saphire and #6 Tile clay. They are 'whiter'
than EPK at cone 10, but I just don't like the workability as much.
My best guess, and it's just a guess, is that you will need a little more
flux in this body, if you want it to be close to vitrified at cone 4-6.

try subbing the ball clay with xx sagger. It adds greatly to the claybody's
ability to stick to itself, Ben

I wish I could get Armadillo's 'Dillo white clay here in KY. Alas, it will
not be.

At cone 6 you'll need almost 50% feldspar to get a vitreous body using
kaolins, ball clay and silica. Grolleg is totally unplastic and expensive.
Augmenting its plasticity with dirty bentonite or ball clay makes little sense.
Sapphire and Tile6 are the most plastic kaolins by far that I know of.
You'll need at least 15 silica or glazes will craze too much.
Why not try a starting point of 40 spar and 15 flint, then splitting the remaind
between the plastic kaolins and maybe 10 ball clay. Adjust plasticity
by juggling the clays.
