------------------
I know that there are lots of posts about brushes in the archives.
But I've never been able to find anything about brush-making supplies. More =
than
the usual floss and bamboo.
I have heard that there are places out there that sell brush making supplies=
and
equiptment, but I have been unable to find them on the internet.
Does anyone have an address or such for such a place?

Celia,
I don't know of a source for brush handles. For furs, epoxy/silicon and
kevlar tying thread, try hooknhackle.com (this may not be correct but the
name of the place is Hook N Hackle. Also the moscow fur company. I think they
have a web page but I don't know the address. They are also a source of sinue
(sp ?), real and artificial.
Hope this helps!

Celia
I just checked out the Moscow Fur Company site. Great site for fur and
other related materials. This is their web site address. Wanted to post
this to the list if others want to check it out.

Celia or anyone else interested;
I have a Goat Coat that would make many- many brushs. The hairs are
stiff-ish, 2-3 inches long, white with brownish tips. Best of all I would
like to sell the coat. Is anyone interested in buying it for use in brush
making? I suppose it could also be used to tie flies or to wear it one
really wanted to. Any takers just e-me and we can dicker. Thanks

Hi Sue !

If you are of a mind...let me know what you could live with as a Goat Coat
Cost.....If I am the lucky recepient the coat will be used in my classes
at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington...where I teach
ceramics and sculpture.....and I have a brush making assignment each
quarter.....potentially your coat could help many, many, many students
find a good hair source...Hope we can work something out......Pat

Hi Celia,

regarding your question on where to get brushmaking supplies...

I just finished giving a workshop for kids on brushmaking (many thanks to
Glenn Grishkoff for his excellent instruction!) at the Crocker Art Museum
in Sacramento.

For handles we used bamboo & other pieces of wood that I'd gathered
locally. We also used thin bamboo from garden supply stores & larger
diameter bamboo & reed bought from Frank's Cane & Rush Supply in
California (714-847-0707).

For the brush part, we experimented with a variety of natural fibers like
manila fibre, corn broom & wheat and we used foams (the kids really liked
"Fun Foam" cut like a mop) and a variety of furs & feathers. I'd planned
on ordering from Moscow Hide & Fur (208-882-0601 / www.hideandfur.com), but
I ran out of time & wound up buying those items from a local fly fishing
shop.

At the fly fishing shop, I also bought a hair stacker (for aligning loose
hairs) & penetrating glues.

>From Tandy Leather (888-890-1611 / www.tandyleather.com) I bought waxed
linen thread & suede lace for tying. I also had plenty of yarns and cotton
threads on hand. The kids used pipe cleaners (which come in wild colors)
for use with the foams.

I don't have any affiliation with any of these companies (except as a
satisfied customer). Since today was the last day of the workshop, all
these catalogs are on the top of the pile on my desk.

Have fun!
