I tested purple icing and got a beautiful purple glaze. Decided to make a
big batch and must have goofed somewhere. Got a beautiful purple but it is
very rough to the touch and not smooth as the test. Coverage is fine. Can
anyone in glaze land give a helping hand as to a cure for this large pot of
glaze?
Is this glaze food safe? It doesn't look harmful but I sense that larger
quantities of harmless chemicals can make a difference.
Purple Icing ^6
Gerstley 6.2
Lithium Carb 2.0
Magnesium Carbonate 6.1
Strontium Carbonate 12.6
Whiting 12.1
Nepheline Syenite 21.0
Flint 40.0
Add:
Tin Oxide 3.0
Cobalt Carbonate 1.0
Rutile 3.6
Bentonite 2.0
Second question. If you have a ^7-10 glaze such as Berry Rust and it does
well at ^6, 7, in oxidation, will it mature at ^10 in a reduction
atmosphere too? If not, what material in the glaze makes the difference
between oxidation and reduction?

This glaze, as it is, should melt just fine at cone 6 - it is seriously
short of alumina and there is no clay in the recipe except for the
bentonite. This is a mystery to me.
I would need the recipe of the Berry Rust to try and answer your 2nd
question. You could try a small test inside a bowl to see what would
happen.

Ron, thanks for answering. The test glaze for the purple icing is fine and
I must have made a mistake when I made the large batch. I'm trying to
salvage that batch. Someone mentioned to me that I might have added too
much whiting and that had given the Purple Icing the roughness. Can I fix
it and how should I attempt to do it? At this point the glaze is worthless
to me. Any suggestions would be helpful. As for the Berry Rust question I
will send that later when I get to my notes. Thanks
