David's original post didn't have a subject and many may have
overlooked his important question.

just discussed this with my cousin... uses laguna ^10... and having the
same problem.. says to try a higher temp in bisque... might help to
release the gases before glaze firing... good luck...

Yes, I have had problems with the consistency of Laguna cone 10 body.
Consistency in that I order the same body everytime, but once in a while I
get a batch with significantly higher sand content. The first time this
happened, I thought I was just being a "baby." The sand was tearing up my
hands while throwing. I thought it was just due to the fact that I'd laid
off clay for a few months and it was going to take some time to toughen up my
hands again.

Later on, a friend of mine who is constantly "borrowing" clay from me asked
why I had switched bodies. Of course, I hadn't and that's when I made the
discovery.

I'm a little leary about continuing to use Laguna because since then I've had
it happen a couple more times. I know they say that you can send it back for
replacement if you find something wrong, but at 1000 lbs, shipping around the
country can get pretty expensive.

I've let them know (once) about this situation. I can only hope they try for
better consistency. Maybe if all of us that have had problems let them know,
they will. I must say that for throwing, it is the best body I've used, so
to that end I would like to continue using it. But, like you said, the
losses can be huge and there is a point at which it's no longer worth the
bother.

Good Luck and keep us posted!

Hello: I use B mix 5 at home for most of my work . Here I have an electric
kiln. At the Center, I have access to a gas kiln and use the ^ 10 BMix. There
has been no bloating at all. One constant with BMix is that it must be dried
slowly. I have had cracking, particularly with hand built and slab work, but
that was my fault because I was pushing it to get a load done for an order. I
am not a good wedger--particularly with recycled clay. I just never seem to
get all the air bubbles out. In too big a hurry to get on with the making
process, I guess. I liken the wedging process to ironing. In a cartoon.
Dennis, the menace, once defined his mother's ironing as: It's what you do if
wrinkles make you nervous.
