Fact is the fungus is environmentally rooted. It is found in the soil
and normally feeds on the chitenous materials found in nature when
organism are decomposing. When it get under the nail and into the
nailbed, it just thinks(??) it has found another source of its common
nutrient, since nails, hair, etc, are similar in their chemical makeup.
So the little fungus is just as happy as can be sitting there feeding on
the nail-bed as if it were in the great outdoors.
If you have gotten it once, believe me, you can get it again if you
don't take precautions. After going barefooted in the swamp, or on the
beach, or in the bathhouse at the pool or digging in the garden or
whatever, if the nails are exposed, there is the risk. And a chlorine
dip, or something similar is certainly in order.
BTRW, if I recall correctly, I think the name of the thing is Tinea
Unguim. I think....It's been a long time since I studied this.
