Lori -I teach at a community college surounded by housing in a
somewhat urban area. Every summer we do raku classes. The easiest way,
so far, I've found to create good reduction without lots of smoke is to
make sure the container is sealed very well. We quit years ago using
trash cans and lids. We now have a sand pit (sand box without a bottom)
for the post reduction area. I made some wire mesh cylinder forms (used
hardware cloth, chicken wire too flimsey) without top or bottom. These
are set into the sand. A handful ( sometimes more) of shredded
newspaper goes in the wire cage (don't pack it down). The pot(s) go in
the cage, ignite the paper, and a can (we steal metal trash cans from
the other faculty) is immediately placed upside down over the cage,
pushed down and twisted to seal the edge in the sand. Good reduction,
little smoke.
