one of the first things you learn in painting is that:
earth tones are natural harmonies....you cannot make
a mistake when you paint with them.

it is the job of the artist to work around natural harmonies, to
create problems of color.

most great painting teachers do not let students use `earth tones`..there
is no problem for them to solve. pink against green or aqua give
one pause to make it work.

young interior decorators love `earth tones`...and for the same reason..
they can do anything, and it will work out sorta well.

we are color people, we artists.
potters have to stand on what they believe, what they love...and if it
is color...hell, go for it.

tony's strong opinions are his..we respect that a great deal. he makes
things work for his standard. they are a team of potters that love the
wood, flashing, shinos....but not all of us come from that cloth.

think of the thousands of people that work full time, come home to their
electric kilns. shall we discount them? tell them their work is not good.

shall we discount linda arbuckle and her wonderful colored pots...i think not.
i will rejoice in them.

we live in a colored world...ceramics can be whatever we want to make it.
there are no color police....and if there where...anarchy.

i paint with color...rich color, the more the merrier.
i like color in my pots...yet, i will fire in wood and look for the flash,
the earth.
salt, and see brown, brown, brown...like the song.`all the pots are brown,
brown, brown, and the clay is gray...california...etc.

we learn to love many things as we get older.
have experience, try other things. it is what artists
and craftspeople want....to try things. new experiences.
see new ideas form.
we will never, most of us, be content with one style, one color, oneness.
it just does not fit.
