Hello to my Clayarter friends from New Zealand with a request for some
information.
I know that, some time ago, I read about a ceramic magazine printed
in New Zealand. I would love to get a copy to have a look at it. I have a
non-Clayart non-potter friend there, who is trying to send me a copy but
cannot seem to find it. Unfortunately, I do not have a name or address for
the magazine, which would really help him. May I ask someone to help me
with that information. My husband is offering me a subscription, if I like
it, so it would be great if I could see a copy. He is very generous in his
pottery-related gifts (all my family is in tune and I get books, magazine
subscriptions, tools, etc for all special occasions!).
Thanks in advance for your help.
Veena

If it's Ceramic Art and Perception, I always manage to look at it in our
Barnes and Noble, where they get every magazine in the world..Its a
lovely read. However, I always mix up Australia and New Zealand in terms
of magazines..this may be the Australian one

Hi, Elca. That is the Australian one. Enjoy it though. I subscribe; it
is my favorite. Bacia

Hallo Veena

I am going to NZ in 2 weeks time for 1 week and will try to find the
magazine you speak of. If anyone knows anything about the publisher it
would be helpful but NZ is such a small place there probably aren't too
many ceramic magazines out there

I was raised in NZ and my husband was born there. We have been in Santa
Monica CA for 20 years next month and don't go back very often but my
entire family lives there. A twin sister and brother in Wellington, mother,
brother and sister in Auckland and various nieces and nephews, one of whom
lives in Nelson. Hope I can be of help.
Regards

I was there last February and picked up a few copies. I liked it so much I
subscribed, but was sent a letter about 3 months ago that they had stopped
publishing. It was called New Zealand Potter, I recall. Too bad--it was
really nice.

Hi Pauline,
Thanks so much for your reply to my query. It is really very kind
of you tooffer to look for the magazine while you are there. I got another
e-mail from another Clayarter, who has been getting a magazine called New
Zealand Potter, but just received a notice to say they are closing down
after forty years. It is really sad that these art related magazines can no
longer survive, like the Canadian magazine, Contact, which closed down
recently.

How interesting that you were brought up in New Zealand. I have
never been there, but we have two very dear friends who live in Wellington.
They were in the Foreign Service, and we got to know them in India. They
were later posted to the States, after we moved to New York, and so we saw
them again, which was great. We have kept in touch for over 30 years now.
He is the one who is looking for the magazine for me. Will now have to
inform him not to search anymore.
It is difficult to leave one's entire family behind. I was born
here and have lived most of my life in the States, Canada and Europe, but
did spend several years in India. When we decided to move to the States,
all the family behind. My parents are both gone now, and I see my brother
and his family in France every so often, because he is married to a French
woman, and both their daughters live in France and England. I have not
been back to India for years now.
It will be great for you to see all the family, but it is a really
short stay, so I guess you are going to be rushing around. If you do hear
of any other pottery publication from NZ, I would really appreciate knowing
about it.
Have a wonderful trip and thanks again.
All the best.
Veena

P.S. Haven't been to Santa Monica either, although we did visit San
Francisco and Monte Rey some years ago. Fell in love with the latter, and
would love to live there...a bit too expensive though!

Apart from club and society newsletters, the only national pottery magazine
I've heard of here was the New Zealand Potter, defunct for over a year I
believe.

In my opinion it was an OK magazine, but too sparse on technical information
and too heavy on elitist name-dropping. For example they always printed
"name potters" in bold print which always irritated me and I believe gave an
insight into the prevailing editorial culture. It was no surprise when it
went under, because I feel it did not address the broad cross-section of
practitioners needs very well.

Australia (not to be confused with NZ under any circumstances!), to our
chagrin has several excellent and seemingly healthy potting/ceramics
magazines.
