As an alternative to Molochite grog, I wish to make grog by calcining some
shredded kaolin clay(Eckalite 2) for use in a refractory.
>From what I have read kaolin forms mullite and free silica(converted to
cristobalite) when heated. Molochite is heated to peak 1525C and contains
potassium oxide 2% "and ensures that silica liberated during the calcination
process is retained in an amorphous state." "formulation of crystalline
quartz or cristobalite is inhibited".
What should I do to limit quartz/cristobalite formation?
I can only fire to little over 1300C. It has been mentioned on this list to
keep feldspar at >10% in clay bodies.
How vitrified(absorbtion test) should it be, yet be a refractory at 1300C?
Thank's for any input.
