malfunctioning cones, was: soda effect cones?

I havent noticed any responses to merrie, I don't have the answer but have
similar questtions.

When and how do cones malfunction.

I have seen cases where cone 6 is down, 8 is unmoved and 9 is down, but not
often.

At the Tozan, in a long firing it has at times been felt the cones are
frozen and are not going to move. frozen because of ash or carbon deposits.

What is the scientific, if there is one, explanation for this and what steps
would you take to ensure reaching temperature? I know that you need to read
colour and glaze, but these old eyes already hurt and I'm not there yet to
confidently call on colour.

How common are frozen or malfunctioning cones in wood firing (or otherwise)?
Would more cone packs in more places help? or would that just give you
better info for that area/shelf?

Like I said, I'm no expert and would sure like to know more.
