Hi Jean,

In response to your querry to clayart about cones, and purchased cone
plaques, I would like to say ditto to Bill and Joyce. Make your own cone
holders out of clay, trying to match the example of the purchased cone
holder. Don't worry if it's not perfect Jean, It's really ok. This is not
an exact art. Just make sure that you always make them about the same,
and then don't worry about it. As for your different temps in different
parts of the kiln; that goes for all of us. Just try your best to get the
kiln to fire evenly, then accept the fact that it will never fire exactly
even, and live with it. You will eventually find that certain glazes work
better in some spots than others, and will grow to appreciate that fact.
You will grow to SO appreciate that fact, that eventually you will count
on it happening that way, and will be disappointed when at some point it
doesn't anymore! This artform called FIRING has a certain aliveness to
it, a certain unpredictability, a certain uncertainty, and all we can
really hope for is to learn to pay attention, and see if it will allow us
to understand. At some point if we're lucky, we may find that we've
stepped into the kiln chamber of AHA! And then it starts to not matter
anymore what things are SUPPOSED to look like. All we know at that time
is what we see, and what we like.
Good luck, and may the cones be with you. David
