Below is a question from my daughter.
We are using Mason stains (Deep Crimson) and are wondering if there is a
*better* Red out there..?
Also wondering why the Red and Purples are still hard to come by?
The True colors, that is.
> Isn't REALLY RED pigment REALLY expensive?
> My red pigment isn't even really red. Hmmm.
> Mom-clue us in here-what's the scoop on red
> pigments. Does it have to do w/ the same reason we
> can't get a great purple pigment at a decent price
> or even at all?
> Rachel
TIA

Hi Debra, I use Cerdec/Degussa Inclusion Stain - SD27496 - Intensive Red as=
a
majolica colorant. It's a fairly bright orangey-red, unlike anything
availabled in a Mason stain. It can be mixed with mason stains to jazz up =
the
pinky crimsons, with Praes. Yellow for a good orange. It's a cadmium stain =
but
supposedly not as toxic as some cadmium glazes. However, I'd do some =
research
before using it on surfaces coming in contact with food.
Ceramic King/New Mexico Clay in Albuquerque usually has it - ap. 20.00 for
quarter lb.=3B 60.00 per lb. Worth every penny. I see on their catalog =
they have
a web page http://www.nmclay.com/ceramic.
A fairly good purple can be made by mixing a little cobalt with Mason stain
6385, Pansy Purple.
