Jim,

Helmar is available from Seattle Pottery Supply. Also Trinity has a
French Kaolin (I forgot the name of it) which is great in wood.

Can someone explain what flashing slip is and how it's used in a cone 10 =

This gas kiln and cone 10 firing is kinda like starting all over again. =
Something new everyday.

Flashing slip is usually some kind of kaolin, light colored ball clay
or terra sig with a small amount of impurities in it. You get
flashing color, red/orange/yellow marking, with them in wood, salt and
soda firing.

You can get something like flashing (brownish) in gas
firing by dipping the outer portion of bare clay bean pots in old
Calgon which was made with sodium hexametaphosphate. Dyers use
sodium hexametaphosphate and you can buy it online.

Dear Lee;

I should point out that it is the high alumina in kaolin that helps
the red/orange color. One could make a fine slip with ball clay,
alumina and neph Sye. Phosphorus helps as well. It is not only the
impurities that provide the color...... the 'gravy' they are in makes
a huge difference too.

If you want a simple Flashing slip for wood or even gas firing mix a =3D
batch of Wirt carbon trap and add 10-20% of EPK and use some of the =3D
15-20 of the additional as (5% of calcined EPK to help controll the =3D
shrinkage. You'll find that this makes a good Flashing Carbon Trap =3D
slip.
