I will be visiting my son in Tokyo from October 7 - 19. Are there any
pottery exhibits that I should see? In galleries or department stores? My
son lives in Nerima.
Thanks in advance.

Dear Louise,
I believe that the Mitsukoshi department store in Nihonbashi has clay
exhibits all of the time. I know that they have a display of pots by very
highly regarded Japanese potters, including some Living National
Treasures.
Robert Yellin Writes a gallery column for teh Japan Times in English. I
don't know if he is still on this list. You might ask you son to watch
for Robert's Column.
The National Museum near/in Ueno park has some nice pots on display.
The best bet is to contact the Tourist Information center (I think you
can find them on the interent thru the Japanese Embassy web site) for help
they have lots of info in English. There is one in Tokyo and one in New
York and one in San Francisco. (you did notindicate where you live so I
can't be more specific).
Good luck and please do report on what you see.

Dear Louise
I did not read your original msg and am guessing that your son is visiting
Tokyo/Japan.
First Robert Yellin can be reached at
rlyell@izu.co.jp
secondly I would recommend a book by Richard Wilson "Inside Japanese
Ceramics" ISBN 0-8348-0346-1 This would give bckground on the different
regions and schools of ceramics in Japan
Lastly take a 2-3 hour trip north of Tokyo to the Mashiko Museum of
ceramics where they have an excellent display of representative work from
all the areas (regions) of Japan
Almost all of the major department stores have great pottery departments and
you can always find special exhibits in the bigger stores. The saturday
issue of Japan Times has one page listing exhibits and shows.
