This is what the children of the 5th. Class at the Secondary School in
Nymphenburg (Munich, Germany) ask. Please send your answers to me off list
postbox=40the-coa.org.uk so I can pass all pearls of wisdom on to them.

Thanks

Hi There!

I don't recommend clay as a side-dish. It has a lot of glass formers in it,
which could be destructive to one's intestinal tract. In addition, some clays
may have moulds or bacterial spores that could interfere with one's internal
organs.

I do recommend that one wash his (or her) hands after working with clay.
Furthermore, many studios forbid eating or drinking while throwing or
slab-making. It's best to not mix food and clay.

I have to respond to this post. Don't remember the name of the
originator--sorry. Clay isn't food (at least for people), so it shouldn't be
eaten, however . . . Pregnant women have been known to crave it. Known as
"pika", the craving of non-food substances by pregnant women is believed to
possibly result from shortages of important minerals in the diet. I'd
recommend a good prenatal vitamin/mineral supplement and a varied diet,
though, in place of clay. Much more palatable.
